Song of the Day: "Lay Your Head Down

Nothing like airy French chanteuses, is there? Except maybe airy French chanteuses in videos that look like they were shot in the early '70s

Quote of the Day

"Typical American," said Jess. "What do you want to do? Bomb some poor little country somewhere?"
"Sure. It would take my mind off things, some bombing."

Zapp Brannigan: The key to victory is discipline, and that means a well-made bed. You will practice until you can make your bed in your sleep.
Fry: You mean while I'm sleeping in it?

Song of the Day: "Sun Is in the Sky, Oh Why, Oh Why, Would I Wanna Be Anywhere Eles?

This song is stuck in my head and now it shall be in yours as well.

Riding through the city on my bike all day
Cause the filth took away my licence
It doesn't get me down and I feel ok
Cause the sights that I'm seeing are priceless

Everything seems to look as it should
But I wonder what goes on behind doors
A fella looking dapper, but he's sittin with a slapper
Then I see it's a pimp and his crack whore

You might laugh you might frown
Walkin' round London town

Chorus
Sun is in the sky oh why oh why ?
Would I wanna be anywhere else
Sun is in the sky oh why oh why ?
Would I wanna be anywhere else

When you look with your eyes
Everything seems nice
But if you look twice
you can see it's all lies

There was a little old lady, who was walkin down the road
She was struggling with bags from Tesco
There were people from the city havin lunch in the park
I believe that it's called al fresco
[ Ldn lyrics found on http://www.completealbumlyrics.com ]
Then a kid came along to offer a hand

But before she had time to accept it
hits her over the head, doesn't care if she's dead
Cause he's got all her jewellery and wallet

You might laugh you might frown
walkin round London town

Chorus
Sun is in the sky oh why oh why ?
Would I wanna be anywhere else
Sun is in the sky oh why oh why ?
Would I wanna be anywhere else

When you look with your eyes
Everything seems nice
But if you look twice
you can see it's all lies

Life, that's city life, yeah that's city life, that's city life
Life, that's city life, yeah that's city life, that's city life

Chorus
Sun is in the sky oh why oh why ?
Would I wanna be anywhere else
Sun is in the sky oh why oh why ?
Would I wanna be anywhere else
Chorus x4

Quote of the Day

Google and Wikipedia have the same fundamental problem--distributed mechanisms intended to label information quality function as mechanisms of apportioning social status, at which point the incentive to hack them is functionally infinite.

-Graydon Saunders

Song of the Day: "Something I Keep Forgetting"

Ninety days will protect our ways
Fire puts out fire
We'll build walls then we'll build them higher
This will keep them out

The street's on fire
The street's on fire
They'll push you down again, oh
Something I keep forgetting
Something I keep forgetting
Something I keep forgetting
Something I, I, I, I

Riot shields and plastic bullets
An eye for an eye
We'll keep pushing, we'll keep pushing
All our very modern ways

The street's on fire
The street's on fire
They'll push you down again, oh
They'll push you down again, oh
Something I keep forgetting
Something I keep forgetting
Something I, I, I, I

Something I keep forgetting
Something I keep forgetting
Something I keep forgetting
Something I, I, I, I

Squirrel vs Ninja

Rogue squirrels in Germany, rogue ninjas in Italy ... what is the world coming to?

An aggressive squirrel attacked and injured three people in a German town before a 72-year-old pensioner dispatched the rampaging animal with his crutch.

And:

A ninja who had been terrorising farmers in northern Italy has finally been captured by police.

The ninja, dressed entirely in black, would strike at remote farms in the Rovigo region, near Venice in north-east Italy. Moving in the shadows, as silent as nightfall, 32-year-old Russian Igor Vaclavic armed himself with a bow and arrow, and strapped a hunting knife to his leg to carry out his robberies.

[...]

Upon his arrest, Vaclavic reportedly told police that he was inspired by Robin Hood.

Robin Hood was not a ninja.

Quote of the Day

The effect of liberty to individuals is that they may do what they please: we ought to see what it will please them to do, before we risk congratulations.

-Edmund Burke

Song of the Day: "Potato Wave Icee Dems Brown the Runway"

Today's song is "Yellow Ledbetter" by Pearl Jam ... but with a twist.

The actual lyrics, should you care:

Unsealed
On a porch a letter sat
Then you said i wanna leave it again
Once I saw her on a beach of weathered sand
And on the sand I wanna leave it again... yeah
On a weekend I wanna wish it all away yeah...
And they called and I said that I want what I said
And then I call out again
And the reason oughta leave her calm I know
I said i dont know whether
Im the boxer or the bag
Ah yeah ehh....
Can you see them
Out on the porch
But they dont wave
I see them round the front way yeah
And I know I dont want to stay...

Make me cry

Ooooh I see
I dont know theres something else
I wanna drum it all away
Oh I said I dont, I dont know whether Im a boxer or the bag
Ah yeah ehh....
Can you see them
Out on the porch
But they dont wave
I see them round the front way yeah
And I know I dont want to stay
I dont wanna stay (2x)
Dont
Dont wanna
Oh... yeah... oooh...

Song of the Day: Must be the Moon

If It Takes a Village, Why Can't We Cane Children That Don't Belong to Us?

Why are people such bad parents these days? You go into a store, and there are a bunch of three-foot tall snot-buckets running around in the aisles, screaming like bloody-fuck, and crashing into things because they can't use those stupid frackin' "heelies" -- those shoes with a skate wheel embedded in the heel. And where are the parents? Yappin' on the phone about how Sarah's blind date went last night, and whether Louise will get back together with Frank. Goddammit people, if your kid acts up, take them out to your car and paddle their ass till they shut up. Seriously.

I'm not alone in this. Other people are getting fed up too:

Again, I’m no child psychologist, and I’m sure that, had we had this conversation in person, you would currently be pulling out the "don’t tell me how to raise my child, this came from my womb and not yours" argument as if this were some bulletproof trump card that makes you immune from criticism, but it has to be said: you’re shitty parents, you’re shitty moviegoers, and you’re shitty human beings. Either give up your kids to someone who can properly take care for them, hire a damned babysitter every once in a while, or just don’t go to the movies.

[...]

Oh, and did you have to be minorities? As a minority myself, I find it irritating that your blatant lack of intelligence perpetuates old stereotypes regarding the way brown people are said to act in movie theaters. Let it be known that I’ve talked it over with the other minorities, and we have come to the conclusion that you are no longer welcome at the meetings anymore.

Frackin' A. And if anyone objects to my telling them they're a shitty parent, tough titty. I don't have kids. You know why -- I don't want to put up with their crap. But the world is full of inconsiderate asswipes who feel that just because they can't figure out how a condom works, everyone should have to suffer for it. Enough. Breeders do not rule the world -- though they certainly make sure they get the tax-breaks, but that's a rant for another day. For now, just do me a favor and slap the next kid you see. They deserve it, trust me.

Diamond Whores

Jonah Goldberg spends a lot of time being wrong, but when he's right, he's abso-frackin'-lutely right.

[T]he diamond engagement ring thing is a social convention that will never, ever, ever, ever die. If it was a fur coat, there might — might — be a chance at killing the tradition. But not the rock. Looked at objectively, it's an absurd custom. I remember talking with the Fair Jessica about it. She was far less invested in getting a diamond engagement ring than most women. She understood how silly it is to spend huge amounts of scarce just-starting-out resources on some crystallized coal. And it wasn't even the money for me. I heartily offered to buy the equivalent amount of stock in De Beers. It's just absurd to lock up precious resources in something you'll never sell — hence the genius of the diamond business. But, at the end of the day, no one will believe you that you didn't get the rock on principle. Her friends won't. Your friends won't. Her family won't. No one. In the spirit of misery loves company, your guy friends — who are deeply invested in defending their decision to get the rock for their wives — will give you a brutal time about how cheap you are. Her friends are similarly invested. Everyone is.

A few people will refuse to do it on principle, but their heresy will only reinforce the custom. A few men will decline because they simply can't afford it. But if they ever find themselves living more prosperous lives they'll atone at the jewelry store eventually.

The diamond is the modern updating of the mastodon hide and the shiny rock. It's a sign, a ritual, a public declaration of commitment grounded in ancient custom and instinctual drives older than democracy, monotheism and the wheel. Of course, it's irrational. Chesterton may have been wrong that the purely rational man will not marry, but surely the purely rational man would never buy a diamond engagement ring. But we are not purely rational creatures. Diamonds are forever. Period.

The international diamond cartels have certainly created a great racket -- making poor third worlders give their blood and sweat to haul up crystalized carbon, which imbues it with intangible magical powers that make it superior to artificially created carbon crystals. The cartels then dole these crystals out at artificially inflated prices to men who then exchange them for sex with women in a way that doesn't make the women feel like a complete whores.

Teh Gay Bomb

Why is the US having such a tough go at it in Iraq? I'll tell you why. It's because the Pentagon is full of people who spend too much time coming up with dumb weapons systems instead of reading Machiavelli.

"The Ohio Air Force lab proposed that a bomb be developed that contained a chemical that would cause enemy soliders to become gay, and to have their units break down because all their soldiers became irresistably attractive to one another," Hammond said after reviwing the documents.

As Dark Helmet said, "Evil will always triumph because good is dumb."

Quote of the Day

Wesley tells them to get a bat. When they don't know what it is, he describes Worf's penis. It's not awkward at all.
-Wil Wheaton

Song of the Day: "That Fickle Little Bitch Romance

Today's song is by, surprise ... The Dresden Dolls. Yes, I'm a bit obsessed with them, but they're like the band my high school drama club would've formed if we had musical talent. And, if I haven't mentioned this before, Amanda Palmer is +3|-| |-|@\/\/+ and +3|-| $3><.

So here it is, their brand new video for "The Shores of California", which is possibly my favorite song off their Yes, Virginia album (well, depending on the time of day, phase of the moon, and whether the cock crowed before dawn).

He's been trying with limited success
To get this girl to let him get into her dress
But every time he thinks he's getting close
She threatens death before he gets a chance

And that's the way it is in Minnesota
And that's the way it is in Oklahoma
That's the way it's been since protozoa
First climbed onto the shores of California

And she's been trying with limited success
To get him to turn out the lights and dance
Cause like any girl all she really wants
That fickle little bitch romance
That fickle little bitch romance

And that is why a girl is called a tease
And that is why a guy is called a sleaze
And that's why god made escort agencies
One life to live and mace and GHB

And that's the way it is in Minnesota
And that's the way it is in Oklahoma
That's the way since the animals and noah
First climbed onto the shores of California

Must not be too kind
Stop thinking love is blind
Clench your fists yeah write
"She's just not my type..."

Why all these conflicting specifications
Maybe to prevent overpopulation
All I know is that all around the nation
The girls are crying and the boys are masturbating
The girls are crying and the boys are masturbating

And that's the way it is in Minnesota
And that's the way it is in Oklahoma
That's the way Aristophanes and Homer
Wrote the Iliad and Lysistrata (not in that order...)

And that's the way it is in Minnesota
And that's the way it is in Oklahoma
That's the way it's been since protozoa
First climbed onto the shores of California

Song of the Day: "There's a Concrete Sky Falling from the Trees Again"

I've been listening to this song for five years now, and I still haven't figured out what a concrete sky is supposed to be.

Beth Orton Concrete Sky

[via FoxyTunes / Beth Orton]

Faith has a good side
Still, everyone she ever loved,
They all turned bad
Constance has his own way of breathing
You know you couldn't will him to survive
Couldn't will him if you if you tried

There's a concrete sky
Falling from the trees again
And I know now why
It's not coming round too soon
It's harder than a heartbreak too

I've seen your good side
But I still don't know just what it is that you might want
See, you got your own way of moving
And you know you could save it

Save my soul
Save some for you
Hold my soul
I feel like I'm falling
I feel like I'm falling

And there's a concrete sky
Falling from the trees again
And I know now why
It's not coming 'round too soon
It's harder than a heartbreak too
It's tough enough what love will do

So much time
Got lost in my mind
But I know now what I must rely on
It's a sound, forgetting,
And the worst thing

I've been out walking,
Don't do too much talking
Don't take too much time
Wouldn't take all your time
'Cause it's as precious as mine

Save my soul
Save some for you
Save your soul
I feel like I'm falling
I feel like I'm falling

And there's a concrete sky
Falling from the trees again
And you know now why
It's not coming 'round too soon
It's harder than a heartbreak too
It's tough enough what love will do
And you're as precious as mine
And you're as precious as mine

Apocalypse Then

I've had the latest DVD edition of Apocalypse Now sitting on my shelf for about eight months now, but I haven't had enough time to even sit through the short version, its commentary, and the special features. Until now. I haven't sat down and watched the whole movie in a dozen years, though I watched part of the extended cut on cable a few years back (the Playboy bunnies through to the French plantation). In the time since my last complete viewing, I've read Conrad's The Heart of Darkness which forms the basic outline of the story. Watching the film today, I noticed that while Coppola was mostly successful in transplanting the story from the Belgian Congo to Indochina, he left out two scenes which I think form the heart of the novel.

The first is the framing story, in which the unnamed narrator is attending a party on a yacht off the English coast. There he meets Marlow, who relates the story of Kurtz. Marlow begins his tale by asking the narrator to imagine how the shores of Britain must've appeared to the Roman legionnaires who first conquered the isle -- dark, forbidding, full of savage natives. The story of Kurtz then serves to show how thin the facade of civilization really is -- "you peel off a little skin and you got raw flesh" as Barbara Payton put it. And while Apocalypse captures much of that theme, it leaves the impression that "the horror" that Kurtz sees lies overseas. Which fits Coppola's political message against foreign adventures, but misses Conrad's point. Imagine the film with a prologue with Willard on a yacht off the coast of Hyanisport, asking his shipmates to imagine what the coast must've looked like to the first English settlers.

The second missing scene, which I feel is the most important, comes after Marlow returns to Europe. He goes to see Kurtz's "intended" and tell her of her fiancee's death. When he finds her, Marlow realizes that the Kurtz she knew was the civilized man, not the savage who had "gone native". Marlow does not believe in lying, but when she asks what Kurtz's dying words were he hesitates ... can he disillusion her with the truth of what Kurtz became? Can he tell her that he died mumbling, "The horror. The Horror"? No. He tells her a sweet lie -- "He died with your name on his lips." He pauses, waiting for the world to crumble around him from such a momentous lie. But the world holds. It is indeed the lies we tell about civilization that holds our society together, for the truth is too terrifying to accept. But this, too, would undermine Coppola's point with the movie, so he ignores it and makes the movie solely about the journey, removing the context which gives it meaning.

Song of the Day: "If You Never Say Your Name Out Loud to Anyone, They Can Never Ever Call You By It"

If I kiss you where it's sore
If I kiss you where it's sore
Will you feel better, better, better
Will you feel anything at all
Will you feel better, better, better
Will you feel anything at all

Born like sisters to this world
In a town where blood ties are only blood
If you never say your name out loud to anyone
They can never ever call you by it

If I kiss you where it's sore
If I kiss you where it's sore
Will you feel better, better, better
Will you feel anything at all
Will you feel better, better, better
Will you feel anything at all

You're getting sadder, getting sadder, getting sadder, getting sadder
And I don't understand, and I don't understand
But if I kiss you where it's sore
If I kiss you where it's sore
Will you feel better, better, better
Will you feel anything at all
Will you feel better, better, better
Will you feel anything at all
Anything at all
Will you feel anything at all
Anything at all
Will you feel anything at all
Anything at all...

Song of the Day: "I Wish I Was Special"

Radiohead's Creep is a great song, but I've always thought it could be improved with a Ukulele. Lucky for me Amanda Palmer of the Dresden Dolls is cool enough to do it.

When you were here before,
couldn't look you in the eye.
You're just like an angel,
your skin makes me cry.
You float like a feather,
in a beautiful world
I wish I was special,
you're so fucking special.

But I'm a creep, I'm a weirdo.
What the hell am I doing here?
I don't belong here.

I don't care if it hurts,
I want to have control.
I want a perfect body,
I want a perfect soul.
I want you to notice,
when I'm not around.
You're so fucking special,
I wish I was special.

But I'm a creep, I'm a weirdo.
What the hell am I doing here?.
I don't belong here

She's running out the door,
she's running,
she run, run, run, run, run.

Whatever makes you happy,
whatever you want.
You're so fucking special,
I wish I was special,

but I'm a creep, I'm a weirdo.
What the hell am I doing here?
I don't belong here,
I don't belong here.

Song of the Day: "We Don't Care About hte Young Folks"

if i told you things i did before
told you how i used to be
would you go along with someone like me
if you knew my story word for word
handled all of my history
would you go along with someone like me

i did before and had my share
it didn't lead nowhere
i would go along with someone like you
it doesn't matter what you did
who you were hanging with
we could stick around and see this night through

and we don't care about the young folks
talkin' bout the young style
and we don't care about the old folks
talkin' 'bout the old style too
and we don't care about our own folks
talkin' 'bout our own stuff
all we care about is talking
talking only me and you

usually when things has gone this far
people tend to disappear
no one would surprise me unless you do

i can tell there's something goin' on
hours seem to disappear
everyone is leaving i'm still with you

it doesn't matter what we do
where we are going to
we can stick around and see this night through

and we don't care about the young folks
talkin' bout the young style
and we don't care about the old folks
talkin' 'bout the old style too
and we don't care about our own folks
talkin' 'bout our own stuff
all we care about is talking
talking only me and you

and we don't care about the young folks
talkin' bout the young style
and we don't care about the old folks
talkin' 'bout the old style too
and we don't care about our own folks
talkin' 'bout our own style
all we care about is talking
talking only me and you
(repeat)
talking only me and you

talking only me and you
talking only me and you

Song of the Day: "A Constellation Once Seen Over Royal David's City"

There was a time when poets had no problem mixing religious and sexual imagery -- look at the Song of Solomon, or some medieval lyrics -- but modern writers tend to shy away from it. Which is why I like Ash's song "Shining Light".

I love how the lyrics compare love to both a "chemical reaction" and the star that led the Magi to Bethlehem. But I don't think the original version of the song really does the lyrics justice. Emm Gryner's cover, is far superior in my view.

Roman candles that burn in the night
Yeah you are a shining light
You lit a torch in the infinite
Yeah you are a shining light
Yeah you light up my life

You have always been a thorn in their side
But to me you're a shining light
You arrive and the night is alive
Yeah you are a shining light
Yeah you light up my life

We made a connection
A full on chemical reaction
But by dark divine intervention
Yeah you are a shining light
A constellation once seen
Over Royal David's city
An epiphany, you burn so pretty
Yeah you are a shining light

You are a force you are a constant source
Yeah you are a shining light
Incandescent in the darkest night
Yeah you are a shining light
My mortal blood I would sacrifice
For you are my shining light
Sovereign bride of the infinite
Yeah you are a shining light
Yeah you light up my life

We made a connection
A full on chemical reaction
But by dark divine intervention
Yeah you are a shining light
A constellation once seen
Over Royal David's city
An epiphany, you burn so pretty
Yeah you are a shining light

These are the days you often say
There's nothing that we cannot do
Beneath a canopy of stars
I'd shed blood for you
The north star in the firmament
You shine the most bright
I've seen you draped in an electric veil
Shrouded in celestial light

We made a connection
A full on chemical reaction
But by dark divine intervention
Yeah you are a shining light
A constellation once seen
Over Royal David's city
An epiphany, you burn so pretty
Yeah you are a shining light
Yeah you light up my life
Yeah you are a shining light
Yeah you light up my life

Song of the Day: "The Moon Without a Tide"

Is it just me, or is this whole video a reference to Race with the Devil?

Gold lion's gonna tell me where the light is,
Gold lion's gonna tell me where the light is,
Take our hands out of control,
Take our hands out of control

Now, tell me what you saw,
Tell me what you saw,
There was a crowd of seeds,
Inside, outside,
I must have done a dozen each

It was the height I threw, the weight,
The shell was crushing you,
I've been around a few

Tell me what you saw,
I'll tell you what to...
Ooh ooh, ooh ooh, ooh ooh, ohh ohh
Ooh ooh, ooh ooh, ooh ooh, ohh ohh

Gold lion's gonna tell me where the light is,
Gold lion's gonna tell me where the light is,
Take our hands out of control,
Take our hands out of control

Outside, Inside,
This is the moon without a tide,
We'll build a fire in your eyes,
We'll build a fire when the cover's getting brighter,
Cold desire, makes the moon without a tide

Tell me what you saw,
I'll tell you what to...
Ooh ooh, ooh ooh, ooh ooh, ohh ohh
Ooh ooh, ooh ooh, ooh ooh, ohh ohh

Song of the Day: Copper Went Ahead and He Just Shot You Through"

Copper on the corner and he loaded two rounds
And I can't even get inside to talk you down
Peter, sweet baby, where'd you get that gun?
You spend half your life trying to turn the other half around

And I tried to come clean, but I guess it's no use
Your face is all over six o'clock news
They cleared the street and then they closed the schools
I can't even get inside

Did you lose your head when the farm went down?
Was is when your daddy died after he moved to town
And I know your momma calls you good for nothing
She says her baby is a failer and she don't want you calling

Peter, sweet baby, there's something I need to say to you
Gonna have your baby this coming June
We could get a little place down by Gilmour park
You could do a little time and save my broken heart

And I tried to come clean, but I guess it's no use
Copper when ahead and he just shot you through
Now you're lying dead on the avenue
And I can't feel my broken heart

Song of the Day: "I'm Always Looking for the Sun"

You make me satisfied
You only want to ride
But that's alright by me
We happen to be free
For what tomorrow brings
No peace and broken wings
It may have been so good
But now it's understood
'Twas just a night

If I could tear my heart
And keep it miles apart
From love of beast or man
And never give a damn
If I could learn to lie
And never show my pride
I'd be just like the rest
Be someone I detest

I'm always looking for the sun
I'm always looking for the sun to shine

Love...
Destroys the best of us
Then leaves the rest of us
Thinking perhaps we'll die
Yet still we stay alive
Lost in a hollow frame
With lonely tears remain
Not knowing our life's worth
Dragging around the earth
How false the light

You make me satisfied
You only want to ride
But that's alright by me
We happen to be free
And if we fall from grace
At least we had a taste
Of something more than this
Unresolved black abyss

I'm always looking for the sun
I'm always looking for the sun
I'm always looking for the sun
I'm only looking for the sun to shine
